Solving A Baby Sleep Problem

One of the joys of being a parent, is looking at a lovely sleeping contented baby. Plenty of uninterrupted sleep provides a really good base for your baby's healthy future. A baby suffering from sleep problems can be a complete nightmare for parents. By putting a baby sleep routine in place, parents will be well on the way to getting their baby into a regular sleeping pattern, that is so essential in these early weeks.

Setting good bedtime habits for your baby, is a good thing to get in place early on. A baby will be happier and more contended during the day, if they have a good sleep pattern in place. This will also make it much more likely that they will sleep through the night.

Here is a list you can use to set the baby's bedtime routine:

As adults, we like to wind down before bed and this should be the same for babies. Try a warm bath, then a story and cuddle before putting them down to sleep in their cot. All of this should be carried out with a calm and quiet voice, so the baby relaxes.

Although its very important that you stay constantly with the routine you have put in place, there is no need to follow a routine that has been set or suggested by someone else. As long as you have something in place that fits your needs, it will easily work and become a habit that your baby will have no problems with.

Whenever you begin this routine, your baby will know that sleep is expected to follow. Babies and infants are creatures of habit, they enjoy the predictability of a sleep ritual and so a regular routine like this can help settle your baby more quickly and also increase the chances of him or her sleeping through the night.

Baby sleep routines, should be put in place as early as possible in your babys' life. Also ensure that the room the baby sleeps in does not have any major changes to it in those early weeks. If you have an older child, you need to get the routine set up as soon as you can, but be aware that it may take a bit longer to work.

If you find that your baby sleep routine is not working, take a look at what you have put in place to see if it can be improved. Maybe when they sleep during the day - there is not a set in stone routine for that? Try to get a daytime sleep routine in place and see if that helps with the nights.

Baby Sleep Advice

Getting the babies room ready, is a very exciting thing to do when you are pregnant. However, one item for this room that is often overlooked is the baby monitor. This electronic device, which enables you to hear the baby, wherever you are in the house is a very useful piece of equipment.

The monitor will be in 2 parts. One is the transmitter, which is placed in the room where the baby is, and the receiver which you take with you to wherever you are. Usually a monitor will transmit up to six hundred feet but there are some available which will transmit up to three thousand feet. The receiver runs on batteries, to enable you to carry it around with you, whilst the transmitter is plugged into an outlet. Most will have back-up batteries in case of a loss of power.

Make sure that you try out the monitor in the shop before you buy it. Sellers should understand why you want to do this and not have any issues with it. You need to ensure there is no static and the sound is clear. Try another model if you do get static. A baby monitor provides peace of mind both during the day and at nighttime, so its not a purchase you should skimp on.

There are some very basic baby monitors on the market and some that are packed with features. Below are some points that you may wish to consider before you buy.

  • Battery low indicator light
  • Baby crying indicator lights. Lets you know if baby is crying, without the need to have the volume up high
  • Ability to buy multiple receivers, so you can place them around the house for convenience

For those who want to monitor the baby even more closely, there are some baby monitors that have motion detectors, and even video so you can see what your baby is doing.

When To Get a Baby On A Schedule

Naturally when you have a newborn baby he should determine when he eats and sleeps etc. So a lot of new parents will be wondering when to get baby on a schedule. There are those that will say that you should establish a routine straight away i.e. breast feed every 2 hours or bottle feed every 4. However that never worked for my daughter. I breast fed and sometimes she would go one hour and then sometimes 3. Pretty difficult to plan around, but then again when you are breast feeding, you can literally feed on demand and it doesn't really matter when you are, so I never found this a hardship.

Whilst sticking to the eating and sleeping routine that baby has set himself, you could start to help him begin to get into a baby sleep schedule, as he gets a little bit older. You can do this by feeding him just before you think he is ready and then lay him down for a nap straight afterwards. Make sure that day feeds encourage him to be alert by talking to him and having a radio or TV on in the background. For night feeds, keep it calm and quiet.

As for when to get baby on a sleep schedule? The first year of baby's life will cover a huge range of what could be considered normal baby sleep habits.
There are some babies can sleep five to six hours very early on and some that will not sleep until around 9 months old. I have met parents with 2 year olds that have said they have not had a full nights sleep since the baby was born! Now I know why there are a lot of only children out there.....

But the thing to remember is that if your baby is happy, alert and eats well, then he is probably getting all the sleep he needs, so do not get overly concerned.

Regardless of your baby's sleeep habits, there are things that you can do to help him sleep for longer at night so that his sleep schedule fits in better with your life. Make sure his daytime sleeps are short and keep things regular throughout the day. Ensure that meals, baths, play and bedtime are always consistent. You should soon find yourself with a happy contented baby, and a baby sleep schedule that fits in with your life. Remember happy and contented babies equal happy Mum and Dad.

How To Get An Over Tired Baby To Sleep

Do you think your baby is not sleeping because he is over tired? As strange as its sounds, you do need to learn how to get an over tired baby to sleep. Think about yourself when you are very tired. How often has it happened that you are so tired you are simply longing to get into your bed? Then when you finally get there sleep eludes you. This can easily happen with babies as well.

Try not to get to this stage by ensuring that you lay him down in his cot as soon as he seems to be tired. Then he will be able to drop off naturally when he is ready.

Another reason for a baby fighting sleep often appears when baby is around eight months old. If baby is really tired when he is put to bed and he does drops off straight away, he will not realise that Mum or Dad has left the room. Then should he wake he becomes anxious. This anxiety leads to other baby sleeping issues and you will find it hard getting baby to sleep alone.

I use EasyBabySleep as a perfect way to deal with baby sleep issues.

Get Baby To Sleep

Are you having problems trying to get baby to sleep? We have all been there - you are so tired and just longing to drop into bed. Baby is sound asleep and all is well.... but the minute you get into bed, baby wakes up and it seems like nothing will get him back off again.

Sleep deprivation is a terrible thing, something you cannot really explain until you have experienced it yourself. That is why new Mums fall over themselves to talk about the baby sleep issues they are having - they have found someone who understands!

When I first had my baby I was very lucky in the fact that she only woke during the night for her feeds and went straight back off again afterwards. Even when we moved her to her own room she was fine. She was quick to sleep through the night, so my husband and myself were feeling very smug and made a point of saying that we really had the perfect baby, and we had achieved the perfect baby sleep schedule...

Of course, she obviously heard this and decided to put us in our place. From about 7 months she just would not go down to sleep at night. Daytime naps were fine - she could be in her cot in her room, or in her travel cot downstairs, but she always slept well. However, the minute she went down at night - the nightmare began.

I really lost count of the amount of things that we tried. Putting her down later, so she was more tired and reading to her in the room til she dropped off were just a couple of them. Neither worked, as she did not appear to get tired enough to drop off straight away and if we ready til she dropped off, she would ping awake as soon as we crept out of the door and the howling would begin again.

In the end, after talking with my health visitor, we tried the trick of putting her down and then leaving and letting her cry. We would then go back in after 5 mins and settle her down again and then leave again, but this time for 10 minutes. You then gradually lengthen the time and eventually the baby will sleep.

Yes this works but you do need to grit your teeth and you and your partner must support each other. Many times we each wanted to give in but you really have to stick with it - even if they wake during the night, you should stick to the same routine. This is more difficult as its so tempting to just bring baby to bed with you and get back to sleep - but stay on track and I promise it will get better.
