When To Get a Baby On A Schedule

Naturally when you have a newborn baby he should determine when he eats and sleeps etc. So a lot of new parents will be wondering when to get baby on a schedule. There are those that will say that you should establish a routine straight away i.e. breast feed every 2 hours or bottle feed every 4. However that never worked for my daughter. I breast fed and sometimes she would go one hour and then sometimes 3. Pretty difficult to plan around, but then again when you are breast feeding, you can literally feed on demand and it doesn't really matter when you are, so I never found this a hardship.

Whilst sticking to the eating and sleeping routine that baby has set himself, you could start to help him begin to get into a baby sleep schedule, as he gets a little bit older. You can do this by feeding him just before you think he is ready and then lay him down for a nap straight afterwards. Make sure that day feeds encourage him to be alert by talking to him and having a radio or TV on in the background. For night feeds, keep it calm and quiet.

As for when to get baby on a sleep schedule? The first year of baby's life will cover a huge range of what could be considered normal baby sleep habits.
There are some babies can sleep five to six hours very early on and some that will not sleep until around 9 months old. I have met parents with 2 year olds that have said they have not had a full nights sleep since the baby was born! Now I know why there are a lot of only children out there.....

But the thing to remember is that if your baby is happy, alert and eats well, then he is probably getting all the sleep he needs, so do not get overly concerned.

Regardless of your baby's sleeep habits, there are things that you can do to help him sleep for longer at night so that his sleep schedule fits in better with your life. Make sure his daytime sleeps are short and keep things regular throughout the day. Ensure that meals, baths, play and bedtime are always consistent. You should soon find yourself with a happy contented baby, and a baby sleep schedule that fits in with your life. Remember happy and contented babies equal happy Mum and Dad.
